Regency Gentlemen's Clubs

This Friday, April 30, join me at The Regency World of Author Lesley-Anne McLeod http://www.lesleyannemcleod.blogspot.com/ as I talk about the how aristocratic men socialized in their elite Gentlemen's Clubs.

Here we have two prime examples of these strongholds of male comraderie:

White's, below, boasted of politics with a Tory flavor, and

Brooks' Club, below, also known as Whig Headquarters.

And never the twain shall meet! I hope to see you on St James' Street 24/7 at http://www.lesleyannemcleod.blogspot.com/!

Regency Time-Travel Hot Tub!

Yep, time-travel hot tubs are all the rage now, with "Hot Tub Time Machine" playing in movie theatres. But perhaps you'd like to experience something that is even more unusual.

Try my 2005 short story "Lady Elizabeth's Excellent Adventure." Find out what happens when an oh, so proper Regency lady suddenly materializes in a New York police officer's hot tub!

Lady Elizabeth would rather be comfortable than go on adventure. She isn't given a choice however, when she takes the plunge ... literally and figuratively, and ends up in a New York cop's hot tub. Is it possible that they can be the answer to each other's unspoken prayers?

Available only at Fictionwise.com. Ebook price: $ .49. Reading time: 5 to 8 minutes.

Happy hot tubbing!

"Family Secrets" Excerpt

"Family Secrets," my newest paranormal romance is now available at Uncial Press and other Internet locations, including Fictionwise.com.

Sometimes secrets can reveal your true love.

Talia Fanetti longs for true love. She's just gotten engaged to eligible bachelor Edmund Bartholomew, so she's all set in the love department.

Or is she?

On a romantic getaway in the country, she learns her future in-laws live in a house awash with secrets. Talia soon makes a startling discovery: she has a secret as well. When Grandmother Bartholomew offers Talia a chance to find out who her true love is, will Talia have the courage to use the magic spell?

Excerpt:

"Granny, child. Call me Granny. Here, won't you have a seat?"

A light flickered, then held, allowing Talia to get her bearings.
Penelope Bartholomew had huge china blue eyes, a pixie expression, and milk-white, lined-by-time skin. She sat in a comforter-covered rocking chair, and extended a shaky hand toward a Queen Anne style chair opposite her.

Talia smiled. "Thank you, Granny. It's so very good to meet you."

Once Talia was seated, Penelope laughed. She seemed disinclined to stop.

Then, as suddenly as she'd started, she fell quiet. "You're going to marry my grandson."

"Yes, I'm Talia, Talia Fanetti, Edmund's--"

"Edmund didn't tell you about me, did he?" Penelope leaned forward and peered into Talia's face as if she needed a pair of eyeglasses to see.

Talia curbed her impulse to move further back in her chair. She considered her reply. What Penelope said was true. Edmund hadn't mentioned her. But how could she tell that to his grandmother?

The rocking chair went back and forth. "Naughty boy. Edmund always was a naughty boy. Not like..."

Talia waited. Not like whom?

Perhaps Penelope forgot what she was going to say for she changed the subject. "She told you about me, though. Didn't she? Told you I had a few screws loose, eh?"

There could be no doubt as to whom Penelope referred--Celeste, Edmund's mother. Talia hedged on her answer. "Celeste did mention that your bedroom is right next to mine. This is such a lovely house. And your room is so interesting."

Truth be told, she couldn't see much other than Penelope, the tiny lamp, and the shuttered window to her right.

Penelope nodded, a sullen look on her face. "Secrets," she crooned. "Everyone has secrets. She has a secret. I have a secret." A crafty expression crept into her eyes. "And so do you!"

"Oh!" Talia didn't expect that remark. Somehow it perturbed her. She moved to the edge of the seat. "I should get back now, Granny. Edmund is bringing up my--"

"Here." Penelope thrust something at her.

Without thinking, Talia took the object. It was a book. A brown paper covered book smaller than the length of her open hand.

The title on the front was all but worn away. She couldn't read the words in this dim light.

"What's this, Granny?"

"It's a book," Penelope snapped, probably thinking Talia was an imbecile.

"I mean, what's it for, Granny?"

Penelope nodded. For several seconds, she continued to bob her weary head. "Spells and potions. Rituals and ceremonies. It's my secret. One of my secrets. Use the book as the need strikes you."
"You mean it's magic?"

"Perhaps," Penelope purred. "You go now. You'll see your true love soon."

This was a little too crazy even for Talia's open-minded upbringing. She couldn't wait to escape.

Hope you enjoy! :))

Olympics of the Future!

We all have Olympic fever now. How we love to watch gifted athletes race, skate, compete their way to winning a gold metal. The first Olympics took place in 776 B.C. in Olympia, Greece. Have you ever wondered about the future? About where the Olympics will be in the year 2458?

The Galactic Olympic Games in the year 2458, as featured in my science fiction/futuristic romance, JANUS IS A TWO-FACED MOON, will have two locations--on Earth and on the Moon. Many new athletic events will be featured, including Air Ballet. Our heroine, Blade Sinclair, an injured ballet dancer, has the opportunity to compete in this new event. She pictures floating on the air while doing a grand jete--a traveling leap across the floor.

What she doesn't know is that she’s competing on the wrong team; an alien team. If Blade doesn’t win a gold medal, her family will die. If Blade does win, the alien Sarthox will destroy Earth.

Here is an excerpt of how Blade practices for this new event: Air Ballet--

Control. Blade had to exercise control. Up in the air in the near zero-g arena, she performed a double pirouette, gathered momentum, then executed another set of turns. She forced herself to spin around two more times before she slowly descended to her partner.

“Excellent.” Va-Thor reached up for her, then held her as she completed the movement with an arabesque position--straightening one leg on the floor and extending the other at an angle to the back of her.

The control she prayed for had nothing to do with air ballet; it was all about Plevake/Jevake Va-Thor. The feel of his cold hands on her waist and thigh, the sight of his flawless complexion, the impossible sound of rustling taffeta where no taffeta was in sight, and the faint smell of ammonia all turned her stomach.

She demanded every ounce of discipline she had at her disposal and gracefully stepped away from his touch.

The music started up again, and with steely determination she threw herself into the difficult movements of classical ballet. How many minutes flew by she didn’t know, but in the middle of a grand jeté leap, which then turned into a somersault, Blade bit her much abused lip, aimed herself downward, then took off again to repeat the routine. Was it only just yesterday that she thought Heaven was on the Moon? She’d been wrong, horribly wrong. She was in Hell, and there was no reprieve.

Practice at the arena ended at eleven, and when that time rolled around, the near zero-g gave way to three-fourths Earth normal. She had no idea how this artificially reduced... and enhanced gravity was accomplished. Something to do with the centrifugal force created by rotation? Or was it some kind of an energy field? In any event, she hit the floor with a jarring thud, which made her knee loudly protest.

If you'd like to read more, you can order the electronic book at Awe-Struck eBooks, Fictionwise.com, Diesel eBooks, among other Internet locations.

Hope you enjoy the Olympics!
