That Touch of Minx!

Yep, that's right! Minx Tobin is where Living in the Romance Writing with a Twist World is in February. Minx number 5, that is: The Yuletide Yorkshire. :)) We just can't get enough of Minx, can we? Her homicide lieutenant, Gabe Harris, feels the same way!

We're also counting the days until the Minx Tobin Murder Mystery Series debuts. Right now the countdown is 174 days... August 1st at Desert Breeze Publishing!

In the meantime, it's almost Valentine's Day. Here are some chocolates just for you...

2010 EPIC Award Finalist for Best Historical Romance: PAGING MISS GALLOWAY

January is for JANUS!

For those of you interested in how New Year's resolutions are linked with an ancient Roman god, I thought I'd post my Janus article written a few years ago. Hope you enjoy!

January is the month of Janus, the two-headed god of ancient Romans in charge of new beginnings. His two faces gazed in opposite directions so that he could watch the start and the end of each day. With such a momentous job, Janus was the natural choice to usher in the New Year. But the actual first day of the New Year was up for grabs until the Roman Senate settled on January 1. Janus became the god people prayed to for mercy from their enemies and for a prosperous time ahead.

Janus is one of the few Roman gods that has no counterpart in Greek mythology as the Zeus/Jupiter or Hera/Juno duality. Janus was one of the "good gods" who humankind could appeal to for help in everyday life. How Janus became associated with the negative connotation of being hypocritical or deceitful: "two-faced" or "Janus-faced," remains a mystery. God of doors, gateways, beginnings, childbirth, the future and the past, he was often called upon at the start of wars. To show his support, the doors to his temple in the Roman Forum would remain open during wars, while they stayed closed during times of peace.

Beginning the New Year with resolutions is a tradition we are very familiar with. Many people pledge to work on bettering themselves, and vow to stop smoking, lose weight, or give up drinking. The ancient Romans also had resolutions, eager to throw out whatever bad luck they had in the old year and replace it with good luck in the new. They believed in giving New Year's gifts: olive branches from special, sacred trees; gold-covered nuts; or from the wealthy, gold coins of Janus himself.

We in modern times also look forward to a fresh start on January 1 and derive comfort from traditions with our family and friends. Our custom of having parties on New Year's Eve comes from the belief that what people did or ate on January 1 would affect the luck they would have throughout the coming year. What better way to ring in the New Year than celebrating with those you love? Many people still believe in the tradition that if a tall, dark-haired man is the first person to enter their house, they will have good fortune for the entire year. And as for food, black-eyed peas are a requirement to eat on New Year's Day, along with ham or hog jowls, a symbol of prosperity. Some regions consider cabbage as lucky food, donuts as the circle of life, and even rice is considered fortuitous.

Whatever your New Year's resolutions are, may the god Janus be smiling down upon you!

The Gilded Gilgamesh

It's almost lunchtime, and I've been working on the third novel in the Minx Tobin Murder Mystery Series: The Duplicitous Divorce. Our inquisitive gal, Minx, is being treated to dinner at one of L.A.'s hottest new restaurants, The Gilded Gilgamesh. This is a fictitious place, but oh, the food sounds so good!

In Mesopotamian folklore, Gilgamesh is a semi-divine king from Babylonia. The capital of Babylonia is Babylon, and coincidently... or not (!) Minx is from Babylon, on Long Island, New York, not in Babylonia!

To be in harmony with the Mesopotamian theme, Minx and Gabe order food and drinks especially created for The Gilded Gilgamesh. Drinks like--

Cuneiform Cocktails and
Akkadian Ale

For an appetizer, they try:

Stuffed Tigris tomatoes.

And for their main course, they have:

Primal Ribs
Cradle of Civilization Corn, and
Enkidu Endive Salad.
.
Minx ends up being too full to partake of dessert. If she had chosen dessert, I wonder what the name of it would've been!!
.
Well, I'm hungry for sure now. Hope you've enjoyed this delicious Mesopotamian meal. :))

Blogging For You Gotta Read Reviews

On April 6, I blogged with You Gotta Read Reviews. Reader comments were very positive so I thought I'd repost the blog here for your enjoyment!

Here goes!

A big hello and thank you to Tami and You Gotta Read aficionados! I’m Susanne Marie Knight, and I’m your blog hostess for today, April 6. First, a bit about me: 2009 is my tenth year anniversary of being published. My motto is Romance Writing with a Twist, and to date I have 22 books published/under contract, with 2 more in the publishing queue.

Since I write in quite a few different genres, I thought I’d talk about my latest books in some of those genres along with what’s coming up.

My latest Regency published is Paging Miss Galloway, winner of the Awe-Struck Regency Award. A lady disguised as a man is a popular Regency theme with readers, so I thought I’d try my hand at it. I really enjoyed the challenges of making Danny/Danielle act as Lord Trelaine’s page!

Here’s the blurb:

More than she bargained for
Danielle Galloway is determined to visit her convalescing brother. She won’t let her father’s lack of permission stand in her way. Disguising herself as Danny, a servant boy, she takes to the road to begin her grand adventure...only to have her money stolen and her face battered by street ruffians. Now how will she get to the resort town of Bath?

More than he bargained for
The Earl of Trelaine rescues a down-on-his-luck young lad. Against his better judgment, he takes Danny on as his page as he journeys to Bath. But this boy harbors a shocking secret. What’s the earl going to do when he discovers his latest act of kindness might hurl him into the parson’s mousetrap?

If you’d like to see a video trailer for this book, here’s the link:
http://blazingtrailers.com/show.php?title=81

This title is published by Awe-Struck Publishing: www.awe-struck.net.

My latest paranormal romantic suspense published is The Wakefield Disturbance, whose video book trailer received a “Spine-tingling” recommendation from The Savvy Click.com.

Blurb:

A GIFT... OR A CURSE?
Lara Wakefield receives messages from the dead. Her latest “client” is a murdered young girl who wants to be put to rest. The girl’s killer, however, objects. Can Lara find the girl’s body without becoming the next victim?

MONEY OR LOVE?
Private investigator Stuart Manning wants nothing to do with supernatural phenomena. A retainer of $50,000 overcomes his reluctance. Lara’s innate ability, integrity, and beauty cause him to have second thoughts about psychics, while deadly occurrences cause him to believe the little girl’s murderer is still hanging around. How can Stuart protect Lara when the killer is always one step ahead?

Here’s a photo of a llama that was the inspiration for an important character in The Wakefield Disturbance. Resting on the grass can be very relaxing... or can serve another purpose! To find out more, read The Wakefield Disturbance!

This title is published by Uncial Press: www.uncialpress.com.

My latest science fiction romance published is Janus Is A Two-Faced Moon, the second book in the Janus series. The first book is the award-winning Janus Is A Two-Headed God.

Blurb:

BETWEEN A ROCK AND A HARD PLACE.

In the year 2458, injured ballerina Blade Sinclair agrees to participate in the Galactic Olympic Games. Unfortunately, she’s on the wrong team; an alien team. If Blade doesn’t win a gold medal, her family will die. If Blade does win, the Sarthox will destroy Earth. What’s a girl to do??

LOVE HURTS.

Security chief Christopher Bainbridge has had his share of traitorous females. At the Lunar Olympic Games, he finds himself mixed up with another one. But Blade doesn’t seem like a typical traitor, and against his own inclinations, he falls in love with her. How can he help her escape from the Sarthox and save the solar system at the same time?

If you ever happen to go to the Moon (!), here’s a greeting image you can send back to the folks at home:

Link for video trailer: http://blazingtrailers.com/show.php?title=84

This title is published by Awe-Struck Publishing: www.awe-struck.net.

My next book to be published (7/09) is ForEvver, a science fiction romance. Here is the blurb: In the year 2102, the Fountain of Youth exists for only a select few. But you can’t cheat death ForEvver.

One of the locations mentioned in ForEvver is Maui, a beautiful island I had the great good fortune in visiting. Here I am, dwarfed by the famous Iao Needle at Iao Valley State Park:

This title will be published by Awe-Struck Publishing: http://www.awe-struck.net/ in July 2009.

Currently, I’m working on a murder mystery series about a fitness instructor, Minx Tobin, who has a talent for sleuthing. I’ve finished two of the books so far, and am planning to write two more this year.

Here’s a picture of me conferring with the legendary detective, Sherlock Holmes on Minx Tobin’s latest case!

Stay tuned for more developments with the Minx Tobin Mystery Series!

I hope you enjoyed today’s blog. Please be sure to visit my website at http://www.susanneknight.com/ for all the latest Romance Writing with a Twist news!

Wanderlust

If you've been following my posts, you know that I've been working on books for the Minx Tobin Mystery Series. So far I've completed The Bloodstained Bistro, and I've just finished The Ill-gotten Insurance. Currently, I'm working on The Duplicitous Divorce. All of these books are located in Los Angeles, California.

One thing about me is that I do like to travel, even if it is vicariously. Looking over my stash of books (around 25 or so), I see that I've visited several locations in the United States, as well as England--London, Dover, Aldsworth, Swinbrook, Cheltenham, Bath, Hambledon, Northleach, and York, to name some examples. Also traveled to Xaspaar City, Xaspaar, in the center of the Milky Way Galaxy. And don't forget Atlantis, the Bermuda Triangle, Columont from Earth in the future, and also the Moon.

Anyway, what I'm trying to say is that I'm ready for more travel. Therefore, our intrepid fitness instructor, Minx Tobin, will be taking a little trip to Las Vegas to spice things up! So that's where you'll find me--in the Entertainment Capital of the World. :))

I found this travel poster to show how Las Vegas was once advertised:

Here it is, today!

And here I am, next to a Vegas knight.
Okay, not really, but I did take the picture!

Celebrate With Me!!

Hip, hip, hooray!!! I've just finished Minx Tobin's second murder mystery case!!! Come and have a glass of the bubbly with me.
Have as much as you want. You don't have to worry about driving when you drink virtual champagne. :))

Now that Minx has solved The Ill-Gotten Insurance, she's ready to tackle her next case. Perhaps you're wondering what's happening between her and Homicide Lieutenant Gabe Harris. Well, all I can say is: Minx gave him some flowers... her favorite.

But I'll keep the reason for the daffodils a secret!

Shhh!

Anyway, there's more fun... and dead bodies in store for our Ms. Tobin.

Whodunnit?

Yep, in the Minx Tobin Mysteries--Case Two, THE ILL-GOTTEN INSURANCE, we find our amateur detective, Minx, knee-deep in suspects. The moment of truth is just a chapter away. We have (in alphabetical order):

L. G.--The grieving (or not) widow

F. H.--The avid art appraiser with a taste for blackmail

M. K.--The eighth richest man in America (or perhaps he just thinks he is)

and

C. L.--The bankrupt art gallery owner.

Or is it somebody else?? Only our intrepid fitness instructor knows for sure!

In the meantime, hope you all had a Happy Valentine's Day with your sweetie!!

The Screaming Appletini??

Now that PAGING MISS GALLOWAY has successfully launched, it's time to get back to Living in the Romance Writing with a Twist World! This means joining up with Minx Tobin, fitness instructor and amateur detective. Minx is on her second case, THE ILL-GOTTEN INSURANCE. Currently, Minx is investigating the murder of an artist.

No, not Edvard Munch, or his "The Scream". Actually, I envision the artist's work to look something like Alfred Sisley's and his "The Bark During the Flood, Port Marly".

But right now, Minx is more concerned with appletinis, as in drinks. She's waiting in a bistro (no, not The Bloodstained Bistro... well, in a way it is, but with a different name) for homicide lieutenant Gabe Harris. It's her first date ever since she broke it off with her two-timing fiance. Maybe Minx will have more than one appletini while she waits for the lieutenant...

Stay tuned for more developments as Minx pursues a killer!

Time To Get Busy

One really cool thing about a New Year is that the slate's been wiped. It's a chance to start afresh--finish old projects and begin new ones. So, with that in mind, for a limited time, you can download my 2009 Romance Writing with a Twist Calendar for FREE. Below is an image of it. All you have to do is visit www.susanneknight.com/mainpage.htm, then click on the spot for the PDF calendar.

And, to wrap up 2008, I've complied all my Living in the Romance Writing with a Twist World for last year and have assembled them into a slim book that looks like this:

If you'd like to order a copy, just visit www.susanneknight.htm/orders.htm. ALSO, as I mentioned in the last blog, 2009 is a special year for me because I've now been published for ten years!!! To celebrate, I’m having a “buy two books, get one FREE” sale! This sale is only available from sales on my website. Visit www.susanneknight.com/Orders.htm for the order form. Choose any three books; the least expensive book will be FREE. Shipping and handling for three books is $6.00. Total your order and send check or money order (US funds) to the address on the order form. Sorry, books can only be shipped to addresses in the USA. Be sure to “buy two books, get one FREE!”

Now, with that out of the way, what's REALLY been happening in my Living in the Romance Writing with a Twist World?? Well, an opportunity has come my way to start a murder mystery series featuring a fitness instructor. Minx Tobin is her name, and she has a knack for solving puzzles--puzzles concerning unexpected dead bodies.

Minx's adventures are based in Los Angeles, so I get to escape all this snow outside... at least while I'm writing. :)) Case One is finished: The Bloodstained Bistro. I've just started Case Two.

So stay tuned for adventures in L.A. as Minx gets involved with The Ill-gotten Insurance.
