Excerpt: The Bloodstained Bistro

It's Excerpt Time! Read on for Minx Tobins' first case THE BLOODSTAINED BISTRO.

Published by Desert Breeze Publishing, http://www.desertbreezepublishing.com/.

EXCERPT:

The Tobin woman had been surprised by his offer of dinner, but not as surprised as he was himself. Gabe drove onto Santa Monica Boulevard all the while wondering what the hell he had been thinking.

She'd been right; strictly speaking, about fraternizing with a suspect. He was mixing pleasure with official police business. Dynamite that was guaranteed to explode in his face.

He glanced over at his reluctant passenger. Sitting stiffly in the passenger seat, she held her handbag against her chest as if it were a shield offering protection.

Not that she'd need it against him; she wasn't his type. She was lean and athletic. He preferred his women to be of the buxom variety.

And, come to think of it, he might not be her type either. She seemed to have a preference for Brandi Evans' company.

"Where are we going to eat?" Minx asked, turning her dark eyed gaze on him.

Minx. What a helluva name. She hadn't like it when he used it. Her plump lips had turned down imperceptibly. He'd noticed though. It was his job to be observant.

He stopped at a light and looked over at her again. "I thought since we both seem to gravitate toward Valentin's Bistro, we'd go there."

She didn't comment. By the narrowing of her eyes, he could tell she was in a snit. Perhaps he couldn't blame her. She'd just eaten at the bistro last night, although she wasn't aware that he knew that fact.

He parked alongside Valentin's and turned off the engine before noticing the sign on the door proclaiming the bistro to be closed.
"That's strange," he said, more to himself than to the woman.

"It certainly is," she agreed. "I was just here last night. I sure hope it's not closed permanently."

Gabe started up the car again. "Maybe Valentin had an emergency." Whatever was the reason, he'd have to check it out. Later.

So now what? This little tête-à-tête with Minx Tobin was turning out to be a really lousy idea.

"Family Secrets" Excerpt

"Family Secrets," my newest paranormal romance is now available at Uncial Press and other Internet locations, including Fictionwise.com.

Sometimes secrets can reveal your true love.

Talia Fanetti longs for true love. She's just gotten engaged to eligible bachelor Edmund Bartholomew, so she's all set in the love department.

Or is she?

On a romantic getaway in the country, she learns her future in-laws live in a house awash with secrets. Talia soon makes a startling discovery: she has a secret as well. When Grandmother Bartholomew offers Talia a chance to find out who her true love is, will Talia have the courage to use the magic spell?

Excerpt:

"Granny, child. Call me Granny. Here, won't you have a seat?"

A light flickered, then held, allowing Talia to get her bearings.
Penelope Bartholomew had huge china blue eyes, a pixie expression, and milk-white, lined-by-time skin. She sat in a comforter-covered rocking chair, and extended a shaky hand toward a Queen Anne style chair opposite her.

Talia smiled. "Thank you, Granny. It's so very good to meet you."

Once Talia was seated, Penelope laughed. She seemed disinclined to stop.

Then, as suddenly as she'd started, she fell quiet. "You're going to marry my grandson."

"Yes, I'm Talia, Talia Fanetti, Edmund's--"

"Edmund didn't tell you about me, did he?" Penelope leaned forward and peered into Talia's face as if she needed a pair of eyeglasses to see.

Talia curbed her impulse to move further back in her chair. She considered her reply. What Penelope said was true. Edmund hadn't mentioned her. But how could she tell that to his grandmother?

The rocking chair went back and forth. "Naughty boy. Edmund always was a naughty boy. Not like..."

Talia waited. Not like whom?

Perhaps Penelope forgot what she was going to say for she changed the subject. "She told you about me, though. Didn't she? Told you I had a few screws loose, eh?"

There could be no doubt as to whom Penelope referred--Celeste, Edmund's mother. Talia hedged on her answer. "Celeste did mention that your bedroom is right next to mine. This is such a lovely house. And your room is so interesting."

Truth be told, she couldn't see much other than Penelope, the tiny lamp, and the shuttered window to her right.

Penelope nodded, a sullen look on her face. "Secrets," she crooned. "Everyone has secrets. She has a secret. I have a secret." A crafty expression crept into her eyes. "And so do you!"

"Oh!" Talia didn't expect that remark. Somehow it perturbed her. She moved to the edge of the seat. "I should get back now, Granny. Edmund is bringing up my--"

"Here." Penelope thrust something at her.

Without thinking, Talia took the object. It was a book. A brown paper covered book smaller than the length of her open hand.

The title on the front was all but worn away. She couldn't read the words in this dim light.

"What's this, Granny?"

"It's a book," Penelope snapped, probably thinking Talia was an imbecile.

"I mean, what's it for, Granny?"

Penelope nodded. For several seconds, she continued to bob her weary head. "Spells and potions. Rituals and ceremonies. It's my secret. One of my secrets. Use the book as the need strikes you."
"You mean it's magic?"

"Perhaps," Penelope purred. "You go now. You'll see your true love soon."

This was a little too crazy even for Talia's open-minded upbringing. She couldn't wait to escape.

Hope you enjoy! :))

Olympics of the Future!

We all have Olympic fever now. How we love to watch gifted athletes race, skate, compete their way to winning a gold metal. The first Olympics took place in 776 B.C. in Olympia, Greece. Have you ever wondered about the future? About where the Olympics will be in the year 2458?

The Galactic Olympic Games in the year 2458, as featured in my science fiction/futuristic romance, JANUS IS A TWO-FACED MOON, will have two locations--on Earth and on the Moon. Many new athletic events will be featured, including Air Ballet. Our heroine, Blade Sinclair, an injured ballet dancer, has the opportunity to compete in this new event. She pictures floating on the air while doing a grand jete--a traveling leap across the floor.

What she doesn't know is that she’s competing on the wrong team; an alien team. If Blade doesn’t win a gold medal, her family will die. If Blade does win, the alien Sarthox will destroy Earth.

Here is an excerpt of how Blade practices for this new event: Air Ballet--

Control. Blade had to exercise control. Up in the air in the near zero-g arena, she performed a double pirouette, gathered momentum, then executed another set of turns. She forced herself to spin around two more times before she slowly descended to her partner.

“Excellent.” Va-Thor reached up for her, then held her as she completed the movement with an arabesque position--straightening one leg on the floor and extending the other at an angle to the back of her.

The control she prayed for had nothing to do with air ballet; it was all about Plevake/Jevake Va-Thor. The feel of his cold hands on her waist and thigh, the sight of his flawless complexion, the impossible sound of rustling taffeta where no taffeta was in sight, and the faint smell of ammonia all turned her stomach.

She demanded every ounce of discipline she had at her disposal and gracefully stepped away from his touch.

The music started up again, and with steely determination she threw herself into the difficult movements of classical ballet. How many minutes flew by she didn’t know, but in the middle of a grand jeté leap, which then turned into a somersault, Blade bit her much abused lip, aimed herself downward, then took off again to repeat the routine. Was it only just yesterday that she thought Heaven was on the Moon? She’d been wrong, horribly wrong. She was in Hell, and there was no reprieve.

Practice at the arena ended at eleven, and when that time rolled around, the near zero-g gave way to three-fourths Earth normal. She had no idea how this artificially reduced... and enhanced gravity was accomplished. Something to do with the centrifugal force created by rotation? Or was it some kind of an energy field? In any event, she hit the floor with a jarring thud, which made her knee loudly protest.

If you'd like to read more, you can order the electronic book at Awe-Struck eBooks, Fictionwise.com, Diesel eBooks, among other Internet locations.
To order print book, visit Awe-Struck eBooks and Amazon.com.

Hope you enjoy the Olympics!

January is for JANUS!

For those of you interested in how New Year's resolutions are linked with an ancient Roman god, I thought I'd post my Janus article written a few years ago. Hope you enjoy!

January is the month of Janus, the two-headed god of ancient Romans in charge of new beginnings. His two faces gazed in opposite directions so that he could watch the start and the end of each day. With such a momentous job, Janus was the natural choice to usher in the New Year. But the actual first day of the New Year was up for grabs until the Roman Senate settled on January 1. Janus became the god people prayed to for mercy from their enemies and for a prosperous time ahead.

Janus is one of the few Roman gods that has no counterpart in Greek mythology as the Zeus/Jupiter or Hera/Juno duality. Janus was one of the "good gods" who humankind could appeal to for help in everyday life. How Janus became associated with the negative connotation of being hypocritical or deceitful: "two-faced" or "Janus-faced," remains a mystery. God of doors, gateways, beginnings, childbirth, the future and the past, he was often called upon at the start of wars. To show his support, the doors to his temple in the Roman Forum would remain open during wars, while they stayed closed during times of peace.

Beginning the New Year with resolutions is a tradition we are very familiar with. Many people pledge to work on bettering themselves, and vow to stop smoking, lose weight, or give up drinking. The ancient Romans also had resolutions, eager to throw out whatever bad luck they had in the old year and replace it with good luck in the new. They believed in giving New Year's gifts: olive branches from special, sacred trees; gold-covered nuts; or from the wealthy, gold coins of Janus himself.

We in modern times also look forward to a fresh start on January 1 and derive comfort from traditions with our family and friends. Our custom of having parties on New Year's Eve comes from the belief that what people did or ate on January 1 would affect the luck they would have throughout the coming year. What better way to ring in the New Year than celebrating with those you love? Many people still believe in the tradition that if a tall, dark-haired man is the first person to enter their house, they will have good fortune for the entire year. And as for food, black-eyed peas are a requirement to eat on New Year's Day, along with ham or hog jowls, a symbol of prosperity. Some regions consider cabbage as lucky food, donuts as the circle of life, and even rice is considered fortuitous.

Whatever your New Year's resolutions are, may the god Janus be smiling down upon you!

Splashy Summer Surprise Winner!!!

Yippee!!! The winner for my Splashy Summer Surprise Contest is... Earlene G. Congraulations. :))

For her prize, she chose an autographed copy of EPPIE Finalist for Best Historical Romance, THE MAGIC TOKEN.

Is Amanda's golden coin magical? Or is her sudden good fortune just coincidence? You decide!

After receiving a gold coin, Amanda Barclay suddenly becomes governess to the sister of the desirable Duke of Yarborough. The Duke is also the very man who appeared as if by magic during a childish spell so many years ago. Is it coincidence? Or is it Fate?

Don't be sad that the contest is over. We're busy concocting another goody bag to be filled with cool prizes, promo items, and lots of seasonal fun. But just when the new contest will be announced is still unknown. Check back so you can be one of the first entries for the Snowy Season Surprise Contest--2010.

New Year, New Location

Last time I blogged about my Works In Progress, I was in Hilo, Hawaii-- nice and toasty warm. Since then, I’ve moved to Richmond, Virginia and back to Hilo to finish my newest contemporary romance, ONE WIFE TOO MANY. For more news on this really fun romance, keep checking this blog!

So where am I now? My latest WIP is another case in the Minx Tobin Murder Mystery Series.

The title? THE YULETIDE YORKSHIRE--Case Five. I started out the year in Los Angeles, California, but I’ve traveled to Babylon, Long Island, New York--home to Minx’s parents. Things are bound to get a little messy for Minx because she’s going to find something rather disturbing under the Christmas tree. But that’s a secret, so keep it under your hat!

Coming next blog: January is for Janus. Read about New Year's Resolutions and an Ancient Roman God!

'Til next time,

Susanne

On Tap For 2010

Now that it's officially 2010--the start of a new decade, you might be wondering what new Living in the Romance Writing with a Twist World books will be available this year. Let me give you the lineup as it stands.

March 2010: In the middle of March, my contemporary romance short story with a paranormal twist "Family Secrets" will be released by Uncial Press (http://www.uncialpress.com/).

Sometimes secrets can reveal your true love.

Talia Fanetti longs for true love. She’s just gotten engaged to eligible bachelor Edmund Bartholomew, so she’s all set in the love department.

Or is she?

On a romantic getaway in the country, she learns her future in-laws live in a house awash with secrets. Talia soon makes a startling discovery: she has a secret as well. When Grandmother Bartholomew offers Talia a chance to find out who her true love is, will Talia have the courage to use the magic spell?

August 2010: The long awaited debut of the Minx Tobin Murder Mystery Series is August 1st. Who is Minx Tobin, you ask? Minx is a fitness instructor newly relocated to Los Angeles, California, who has a knack for solving puzzles--puzzles concerning dead bodies. For fun, romance, and... unexpected corpses, follow her adventures in this murder mystery series!

Case One: The Bloodstained Bistro & Case Two: The Ill-Gotten Insurance will be released by Desert Breeze Publishing (http://www.desertbreezepublishing.com/).

Sherlock & me!

The Bloodstained Bistro: Eating at Valentin's Bistro can be hazardous to amateur detective Minx Tobin's health, so why does she continue to dine at this restaurant?

TO LIVE... AND DIE IN L.A.
Newly relocated Minx Tobin likes to help her friends. She also has a knack for solving puzzles. A huge puzzle in the form of a dead body soon gets dropped into her lap. Did waitress Brandi Evans murder her ex-boyfriend? Minx doesn't think so, but can she crack the Case of the Bloodstained Bistro?

Overworked homicide lieutenant Gabe Harris has his fill of women... and dead bodies. The women he can handle. The dead bodies -- unfortunately they keep piling up. But on this particular case he meets a young woman that not only impedes his investigation, but she also has no interest in him. A healthy ego like his can't handle that. He'll have to keep an eye on Ms. Minx Tobin.

The Ill-gotten Insurance: Minx's dead friend turns up alive... but not for long. Will the life insurance have to be paid twice?

DEAD AGAIN
An odd string of coincidences leads Minx Tobin to an old friend, Bill Gutierrez. Only Bill died five years ago. Before Minx has a chance to question the man, he turns up dead... again, with a slip of paper in his pocket with her name on it. Whether she likes it or not, Minx is involved in another murder. Will the Case of the Ill-gotten Insurance turn out to be deadly for her as well?

Los Angeles homicide lieutenant Gabe Harris regrets that the fitness trainer who piqued his interest is a murder suspect once again. But at least he has a legitimate reason to see Minx. Maybe he can even convince her to go out with him. And maybe he can prevent L.A.'s newest murderer from adding Minx to his... or her fatality list.

Three brand-new stories for 2010! That's it (so far) for this year's releases. If anything changes, I'll let you know!

Happy reading,

Susanne
